Cedar Fever and Allergies

Over the years in Austin, I have had my share of sinus related issues. ‘Cedar Fever’ is something that results from a build-up of pollen in the body and can really manifest into flu-like symptoms. Austin is also known as the allergy capital…we’re number one!
As a member of the Alternative Healing community, I wanted to share my research and insight in this area of well-being. The way I discern information off the web is by taking several sources and finding the common threads to see what resonates and this case, there is a lot of trial and error that goes into process.
When working at optimum health, the mucus in the sinus cavities are moved out of the respiratory system by tiny hairs called cilia. When the cilia are unable to move mucus out of the nostril, bacteria can build up and cause an infection.
In the case of dealing with sinus issues, there is a valid argument to treating the symptoms, since they appear beyond the point of taking precautions. Sinus headache, watery eyes, sore throat, sinus swelling, fatigue and sneezing are a few of those symptoms. I personally don’t like over the counter antihistamines and decongestants. As a result, I have tried several things and only recently did I discover some of these things methods of relief that I will list as what to do and what not to do.

What not to do:
* Limit outdoor activity. It is good to get blood circulation by going outside
and exercising, but you should avoid the hours of 5am to 10am as this is the
best time for pollen release.
* Avoid humidity levels over 50% and less than 20%
* Don’t drink iced beverages
* Avoid blowing your nose, especially blowing hard
* Stay clear of extreme air temperatures both hot and cold
* Avoid mucus causing foods such as cheese, dairy and peanut butter
* Avoid smoke and drinking alcohol
* Limit stressful physical and mental activities
* Avoid damp weather

What to do:
* Take hot showers (the old reliable method)
* Apply warm compress on sinuses for 3 min, followed by one minute of rest
and one minute of cold compress
* Irrigate the sinuses using a saline solution with a spray system or the
use of a Neti pot. This can be done several times a day using a nasal
* Chew papaya enzymes, especially at night when the cilia ‘sleeps’
* Yoga tai Chi or similar exercises that act as a decongestant
* Clear Ease Natural Fruit Enzyme
* Place a humidifier to bring bedroom to 20% humidity (preferably a cool-
* De-humidifier to reduce humidity to 50% or less
* Use clean bedding to reduce dust mites, mold and allergens
* Sinus tapping (EFT) and Lymph Draining
* Drink plenty of water and take Vitamin C
* Warm drinks such as herbal teas help drain the mucus
* Capsicum (found in Chile peppers) is an active pain and inflammation
control ingredient which can clear nasal congestion
* Massage to help with circulation

A good homeopathic remedy is Zicam Allergy and some Nasal Steroids have been proven very effective with little to no side affects. I recommend working with a doctor and getting in to see one, especially if the conditions persists or worsens within a few days of treatment. It has also been my experience that Nasal Spray decongestants can aggravate the problem after a few days of use. I hope this is helpful and in some way can bring ease to anyone suffering from allergy problems. ~R~
